The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 16520 marked a new chapter for Rolex chronograph men's sports watches.

This new generation is what is known as the "Zenith Daytona" and considered as neo vintage with our tem.

As its name suggests, this Rolex chronograph watch is powered by an automatic calibre from the Zenith manufacture - modified by Rolex*.

Rolex modified this Zenith el primero movement so much that it gave it its own name - the calibre 4030.

HISTORY* ...

1989 : At the time, Zenith's Primero model was at the forefront of chronometry, which is still true today.

It was this type of chronograph caliber model that Rolex chose.

This firm, which never produced automatic hronograph movements, bought them from its trusted suppliers. It was therefore necessary, before dressing the calibre in rolex, to make some modifications, according to the optics specific with this house.

Thus, according to the Rolex technicians, the 36000 A/H of the Primero was excessive because of the always possible problems of lubrication.

They were thus limited to 28800. This change had as a consequence the modification of the escapement as well as several wheels and pinions.

The date was eliminated, the Rolex daytona never had date system.

In the primero movement, this is positioned between 4 and 5 o'clock, which is not the case with Rolex, which, by adopting it, would have broken a long aesthetic tradition. The movement also had to be slimmed down. The Daytona's calibre 4030 is in fact a total of 6.55 mm thick.

The chronography, which is of 1/10 of second in Primero is with Rolex of 1/5. The Rolex hammer is eccentric, a screw with cam makes it possible to extend or close the hammer in order to adapt it perfectly on the heart of the wheel to thus obtain an optimal reset to zero. In the Primero , the small lever was fixed on the bridge and leaned on the trigger of the minute counter .

In the Daytona, the opposite is true: the small lever is fixed to the trigger and rests on a screw on the bridge.

The oscillating weight has been redesigned by Rolex for aesthetic and technical reasons. A special alloy has been adopted on the side, which ensures absolutely efficient winding.

The autonomy of the chrono, used in optimal conditions, is 48 hours.

The rotor completes a full 360° turn and operates in both directions.

The balance wheel is made of Glucydur . The microscopic screws that regulate the passage of time are made of gold. Their specific weight is greater, so they are less subject to temperature variations.

They are also of 2 different sizes: for the lower ones, each notch corresponds to 1 second, while for the larger ones, each notch corresponds to 2 seconds. In the event of a difference of 10 seconds, a correction is made with the 2 second screw, and can be perfected with the 1 second screw.

The Breguet balance-spring used has an even release at all points of the circumference, whereas the flat balance-spring tends to widen more on one side than the other.

It is based on one of the world's most legendary chronograph movements - the Zenith El Primero.

What makes this watch special is that it marks the first generation of automatic Daytona.

Reference 16520 came out at the end of the 1980s.
