It can evacuate the helium atoms that could seep inside the case of the watch at certain very specific prolonged dives, dives so-called "saturation" where divers breathe a gas mixture of helium and oxygen, avoiding certain adverse effects of nitrogen at high pressure, and allowing them to stay several days inside a bell or an underwater station.
Or during the ascent, decompression divers can be faster than the degassing helium content in the watch, which causes a pressure in the housing, which may cause damage.
