What is a Rolex Superdome, dome or service cristal dome ?
These terms refer to the different variations of a plexiglas or tropic crystal made by
Rolex SA.
A plexiglas or tropic crystal is a transparent weather resistant thermoplastic that is
used on wristwatches, as a protective cover over the dial.
Plexiglas have been used by watch companies worldwide from as early as the
1900s till today.
Since sapphire crystals were available during the mid-1980s, watch companies have switched over.
For vintage collectors, plexiglass is still very much relevant in the 2010s and will continue to do so in time to come.
A Rolex Submariner Ref 5513 uses a tropic crystal T-19.
There are 3 variations for a T19 tropic crystal, namely Superdome, Dome & Service Dome.
Ref #19 Superdome has the most rounded profile at the top.
The Superdome has the most light absorbed within the curved plexiglass.
This is due to the gradual curve (or stepped-up effect) of the dome shape on the
Superdome.
