History.... :
Well, for our clients, this is a little story about the Rolex Explorer II called "Freccione" (1655 reference) appeared in 1971....
Its development was guided by a set of specifications that but its strength was to get to this timepiece an innovative and distinctive features: the ability to read the time on a time of 24 hours, even in the dark.
It was notably used by cavers, who were well know, despite an environment devoid of daylight, if it was, for example, 11h or 23h.
The bezel is fixed and non-detachable orange hand (it can not therefore provide a second 24 gmt time schedule in contrast of GMT). The latter performs around the dial in 24 hours, and reading time is done through the telescope.
The most remarkable feature of the first generation produced less than 2 years, happens to be the second hand which is "straight".
These are the most sought after by collectors. On the very first, the middles were thinner, also called "thin case".
She had several versions, which differ in their dial, bezel, hands, case.Abusively called "Steve McQueen", the latter having never reach (Steve McQueen wore, among others, a Rolex Submariner ref 5512 on usa rivet band ) Italians have assigned him the nickname "Freccione" contraction orange arrow Italian.
Rolex decided to stop production in 1984 and replaced in 1985 by the Explorer II, 16550 reference with saphire glass cristal.
