History :


1976-1991: The advent of the 7750 movement at Tudor

The reference 7750, created in 1974, is certainly its best known caliber, because it is one of the most diffused and reliable on the watch market.


It is the challenger of the fashionable EL PRIMERO movement developed by ZENITH brand.


It is attributed to the nickname "tractor" in the 7750, which characterizes, like the Rolex, basic movements but with an exceptional lifetime.


Cal Valjoux 7750 was also designed for this purpose, gathering only 240 x components when it was created in 1974. It was 10% less than its competitor El Primero.

To reduce its cost, ETA has also reduced the frequency, with two versions at 21,600 and 28,800 vibrations per hour, when El Primero was available only 36,000 alternations.


Valjoux will go even further in the economy, proposing three years after its creation the 7755 (without indication of the day) and the 7765, manual version of the 7755.
The sucess of the quartz in the years 70-80's horology, which will carry many calibres, will spare the 7750, already become unavoidable and still active these days...


it is in 1976, that TUDOR presents a new family of products which constitutes a revolution for the brand.


Indeed, these new "Prince Oysterdate" are the first chronographs in the history of TUDOR to be equipped with automatic movements.
Listed as Prince Oysterdate, they are known as "AUTOMATIC CHRONO TIME" or "CHRONO TIME" in reference to the typography on their dials.


If their case keeps the general lines of previous families, it has thickened to make room for the rotor of the automatic movement that will earn him to be nicknamed "Big Block" in collector circles. This name "Big Block" continues in the following series, the 79100 introduced in 1989, and is subject to only minor changes.


Like previous generations, the 9400 series is composed of 3 x references distinguished from each other by their type of bezel, a feature that is also found on the "Big Block" series 79100. Similarly, several dial variations are available but without influence on the referencing.


Two aesthetic differences characterize them, one freely inspired by the spirit of the dials of the two previous series, sometimes nicknamed "Exotic" by the collectors, the other, much more illustrated in the catalog, emphasizing a contrast large dial-counter with black and white or silver and white combinations.

The legendary caliber that animates these new chronographs is the Swiss caliber Valjoux # 7750.
The same diameter as Valjoux 234 (mechanical / manual), 30.4 mm or 13 lines, it is 1.5 mm thicker than the latter and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.


Its chronograph mechanism is a very reliable cam and swing gear system.


The architecture of this new movement induces a reorganization of the dial with the addition of an hour counter, the sliding of the group of counters to the left of the dial and the displacement of the date window at 3 o'clock.

I T E M  D E S C R I P T IO N:
This movement is the Valjoux 7750 automatic caliber, also in a substantially improved version. Its finish is characteristic and benefits from a particular aesthetic effort.


Entirely corked, its decor is said to be "special TUDOR".
The rotor is no longer decorated with a decal marking, but engraved and gilded.
The hardware is now polished instead of being matte.
